My paternal Grandmother, Marion DeRode Brune was 1-year old when the 1906 quake hit. Her family lived at the top of Market in the Castro district of San Francisco. My Great-Grandfather, Frederick Brune, worked for The Max Schmidt Lithography Company then housed in the iconic Clock Tower Building on Market Street where today's Bay Bridge/Interstate 80 now dumps into downtown SF. Once the initial 7.9 quake had subsided, Frederick walked to the top of the Hill to be reunited with my great-grandmother, Marsie, great-Aunt Helen (toddler) and my Grandmother, Marion. They slept in the street, watching SF burn while overcoming after-shock horrors. Growing up in a fault-line family, William Bronson's picture account of THE EARTH SHOOK THE SKY BURNED literally burned a hole in my familial consciousness... until 1971 when Marion's son Ron and my "Brady Bunch" family lived through our own "contemporary" repeat of the same horror! The Brune-Hayes family is truly a family born and raised on the San Andreas!
