Prof. Charles Scawthorn, UC Berkeley PT 1 - Fires after earthquakes

Foremost expert on fires after earthquakes. Published study for state of California on effects of a 7.8 quake in Southern California and the rising fire storm. Says because of what happened later, Sylmar was among the most important seismic events of the 20th century in California.

Prof. Charles Scawthorn, discusses the importance of the 1971 Great Sylmar Earthquake. Because of Sylmar great strides were made in improving safety and mainly response to quakes. Sylmar was the catalyst in improving response worldwide to damaging quakes.

Sue Hough, USGS

Sue Hough is a Seismologist with the US Geological Survey and one of the leaders in her field who has studied the Sylmar earthquake extensively.

Cheri talks about how the 1971 quake still effects Sylmar 50 years later. The changes the community has gone through and what the area has to offer. From the Hang Gliding capital of the world to some of the best equestrian trails in SoCal, but Sylmar remains the "red headed step child" of Los Angeles. 

ROBB GREENSPAN, PRESIDENT THE GREENSPAN COMPANY - INSURANCE ADVOCATES

Robb is the foremost expert on insurance and is an advocate for consumers battling insurance companies. His company has been around for more than seven decades and he lays out the changes in insurance since Sylmar and how the insurers operate. 

Stewart Slavin was a young reporter with UPI (United Press International) and living in Santa Monica when the quake hit. He covered the story and then some.

Before becoming a foreign correspondent for UPI wire service, Stewart was sent to the Van Norman Dam which was about to break and flood the San Fernando Valley (or so everyone thought). He slept in his van the next three days as a reporter becoming a part of the story himself.
